What Are the AS9100 Series Standards?

The International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) developed quality management system requirements specifically for organizations throughout the aviation, space and defense supply chain. Known collectively as the AS9100 series, these standards address organizations involved in the design, manufacturing, distribution, maintenance and support of aerospace and defense products. The standards are based on the structure and requirements of ISO 9001 while adding industry-specific requirements designed to address the heightened quality, safety, reliability and regulatory demands of aerospace applications.

The series includes AS9100, AS9110 and AS9120, with each standard serving a different segment of the aerospace supply chain.

AS9100: Aerospace Manufacturing and Supply

AS9100 is the internationally recognized quality management system standard for organizations in the aviation, space and defense industries. The current revision, AS9100D, incorporates the requirements of ISO 9001 while adding aerospace-specific requirements related to areas such as product safety, operational risk, configuration management, counterfeit parts prevention and supplier controls.

Certification to AS9100 is widely used throughout the aerospace supply chain and helps organizations demonstrate their ability to consistently meet customer, statutory and regulatory requirements, including those of the FAA, DOD and NASA.

AS9110: Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Organizations

AS9110 is designed specifically for aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations. In addition to core quality management system requirements, AS9110 includes requirements applicable to aircraft maintenance and repair activities, including configuration management, prevention of counterfeit and suspected unapproved parts, airworthiness documentation, maintenance records and inspection controls.

The standard helps MRO organizations establish consistent processes while addressing the safety, regulatory and documentation requirements unique to aviation maintenance.

AS9120: Aerospace Distributors

AS9120 applies to organizations that purchase, stock and redistribute aerospace parts, materials and assemblies without performing manufacturing or repair activities. The current version, AS9120B, also known as AS9120:2016, includes requirements addressing areas such as product traceability, counterfeit parts prevention, supplier oversight, risk management and documented process controls.

These requirements are particularly important for distributors because maintaining the identity, condition and traceability of aerospace products throughout the supply chain is critical to product safety and conformity.

The AS9100 Series Is Transitioning to the IA9100 Series

The next generation of aerospace quality management system standards is being developed under new IAQG International Aerospace (IA) designations. The standards are expected to transition from AS9100, AS9110 and AS9120 to IA9100, IA9110 and IA9120, respectively, as the aerospace standards are revised in alignment with the next edition of ISO 9001:2026. Organizations currently certified to an AS9100-series standard should begin following developments so they can understand upcoming changes and prepare for the eventual transition.

Aerospace Certifications Continue to Increase

simpleQuE has been tracking AS9100-series certification data since 2018, and the number of AS9100, AS9110 and AS9120-certified sites worldwide has continued to increase year-after-year. The sustained growth in certifications, particularly in the United States, reflects the importance aerospace and defense customers continue to place on capable, reliable and independently certified suppliers.

According to Deloitte’s 2026 Aerospace and Defense Industry Outlook, “Growth is expected to continue, but it will likely be powered by the industry’s ability to sustain and optimize existing assets while fielding next-generation capabilities. Companies that prioritize digital infrastructure, invest in talent, and operationalize advanced systems can be well positioned to seize the opportunities and meet the challenges ahead.”

For manufacturers, distributors and repair organizations seeking new aerospace business, certification can provide an important competitive advantage while demonstrating that the organization has established a quality management system designed around the industry’s demanding requirements.
