ISO 9001:2015 Is Under Review  – Design Specification Coming Soon

In 2020, when the ISO 9001:2015 standard was supposed to go through its 5-year review for potential updates, it was right in the middle of the Covid pandemic and international turmoil. (All ISO standards go through a systematic review every five years to determine whether it is still valid or needs updating due to technology or other factors.) It was decided to maintain the ISO 9001:2015 standard for another five years before reviewing again for potential changes.

Then on May 26, 2022, the ISO/TC 176/SC2 Strategic Planning and Operations Task Group announced that there was a “need for an early revision of ISO 9001.”   Prior to that, on May 3, 2022, it was announced that the design specification would begin for ISO 9001.  “There was no single major driver for an early revision; however, the volume of elements, when taken together, suggest the need for one.”

“Changes are inevitable and not always controllable.

What can be controlled is how you manage,

react to and work through the change process.”

Next Up – 2024 IATF 16949® and AS9100 Under Review

The automotive industry, which is guided by IATF 16949:2016 and ISO 9001, had decided they couldn’t wait for an update to ISO 9001:2015 and have been working on changes to IATF 16949®.  It was announced last year by the IAOB® that January 2024 was the targeted publication date of the revised automotive standard.  It will incorporate the Sanctioned Interpretations and possibly incorporate universal CSRs if all 10 member manufacturers can consolidate them. The committee will also look at the digitalization of the QMS and its benefits. The aerospace industry has also begun its 5-year review of the AS9100 series, which incorporates ISO 9001 into its standards.

The change process is long.  We are still a few years away from an ISO 9001 revision being published, possibly in 2025 or 2026, and then companies have three years to upgrade to the newest release. It will be interesting to see what impact (if any) the ISO 9001 changes will have on the other standards.  SimpleQuE’s industry experts will be monitoring the changes and publishing the information in our blog to keep you up-to-date on the revisions.
