What is TS 16949 Certification and Why Do You Need It?
ISO 9001 is the basic international method of establishing standard practices in businesses across many industries. But specific industries – especially those involved in manufacturing – have taken those standards a step further.
Because of the generality of ISO 9001, these industries have tailored their standards and certification to best fit their processes, resulting in new quality management system standards. One such industry to do this is the automotive industry, which created TS 16949.
What is TS 16949?
According to the ISO’s website, TS 16949 certification “defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and, when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products.”
When implemented, TS 16949 certification offers continual improvement in a manufacturer’s processes by eliminating waste in the supply chain and preventing defects from halting production.
Per the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) that wrote TS 16949, it is a robust global automotive standard requiring process driven compliance to assure control of product and process, and to provide a quality management system which serves as a foundation for continual improvement.
TS 16949 has been adopted by the US and European automotive world and is becoming a tool used by the Japanese auto makers. As the call for improved supply chains and quality management systems grow, you should strongly consider working toward TS 16949 certification if you supply parts to the automotive industry, no matter how far down the supply chain you may be.
